INTRODUCING THE ORIGINAL CHICAGO STYLE HOT DOG
When
two young immigrants brought their frankfurter recipe from
Austria-Hungary to Chicago's World Fair / Columbian
Exposition in 1893, they knew they were starting a taste
sensation. What they didn't know was that they were
starting an empire. The new-fangled hot dog sandwich -- a
pure beef frankfurter in a steamed bun with yellow
mustard, bright green relish, chopped onion, tomato
wedges, a kosher pickle spear, sport peppers and a dash of
celery salt -- quickly became Chicago's favorite treat. It
wasn't long before the entire country discovered Vienna.
MORE THAN A CENTURY OF TASTE
The Chicago-style hot dog hasn't changed, and neither has
Vienna® Beef's
commitment to quality. Customers know that Vienna®
Beef means goodness throughout, from the 100% domestic
beef and sweet brisket trimmings to the high-tech
processing and old-world hickory smoking, all prepared in
our USDA Establishment 1 approved facility. Customers know
the "V" means pure Chicago flavor -- without a single
unnatural additive or undeserved compliment.

The Frito-Lay Story
In 1932, two young entrepreneurs
independently started two separate companies that were
thousands of miles apart. Both men had the same objective in
mind, and both shared the same basic business philosophy:
"Provide the customer with a product of the highest quality
and value; sell it for a fair profit; and make service a
fundamental part of doing business."
Elmer Doolin of San Antonio, Texas started his company by
purchasing the rights to a then unknown corn chip product
that he would make famous.
Herman
W. Lay of Nashville, Tennessee developed his business by
selling a product that was familiar to people in his region,
but later would become America's favorite potato chip.
These two savvy businessmen, who
transformed a small, fragmented portion of the food business
into the large, flourishing world of snack foods, created an
industry based on unrivaled customer service and superior
products. |

THE
NAME GONNELLA,
for Chicago food connoisseurs, conjures up visions
of freshly baked, aromatic, crisp-crusted bread. A
true hearth-baked product baked fresh every day of
the year.
THE GONNELLA BAKING COMPANY
now produces over a million and a half pounds of
product weekly, from a total of seven lines in
three plants. The current facilities are far more
sophisticated and extensive than the original
operation which processed a few hundred loaves
weekly in a basement shop on Chicago's De Koven
Street. The bread that comes out of the ovens
today is the same top quality product that
Alessandro Gonnella produced in his small, wood
burning oven when he founded the company over a
century ago.

William Dreyer began his love affair with ice cream in 1906 when, as a
galley boy, he earned the prestigious job of making a frozen dessert
to celebrate his German ship’s arrival in America.
After a brief career making ice cream in New York, he settled in
northern California and began a 20-year apprenticeship with ice cream
makers such as National Ice Cream Company and Peerless Ice Cream.
Dreyer opened his own ice creamery in Visalia, California, and won
First Prize at the 1921 Pacific Slope Dairy Show. Over the next two
decades, he taught ice cream courses at the University of California
and served as an officer in the California Dairy Industries
Association.
Grand Beginnings
Dreyer found a business partner and kindred spirit in renowned
candy-maker Joseph Edy after moving to Oakland, California. Dreyer’s
ice cream expertise and Edy’s candy-making acumen created a winning
combination. Their small ice cream factory on Grand Avenue quickly
became a gathering place. “Grand” has been part of the company name
ever since – both as a reminder of the company’s birthplace on Grand
Avenue and a declaration of the outstanding quality of their ice
cream. Read

To the
youngest generation in the Boyd family, it was their
great-great grandfather who founded the Boyd Coffee
Company, Percival Dewe Boyd. P.D. Boyd, born in New
Zealand in 1879, came to the United States with his family
in 1882. Landing in the great Northwest, PD Boyd worked in
grocery and sales until he decided to go off on his own
and start his own business around 1900.

Located in
downtown Portland, Boyd peddled his wares from a red,
horse-drawn wagon he had purchased for $5 and thus,
founding the "Boyd Importing Tea Company." By 1910, the
horse-drawn wagons were replaced with trucks. With the
spread of the automobile, the business took a new
direction, and by 1920, home delivery was terminated. As
his business grew, and Boyd gained in popularity, his
reputation as a perfectionist followed. His greatest
passion was for quality coffee. He also proved to be an
ingenious businessman. Boyd was the first US coffee
distributor to loan coffee brewing equipment to
restaurants and the food service industry, a tradition
that spread throughout the industry.
By 1939, PD
Boyd had a branch office in Yakima, Washington and soon
other distribution points were established. The "Boyd
Blend" of coffee was in demand.
